Edward R. Brandt — 08:44 AM Mar 08, 2009 Dear Rabbi Lerner, I wish you a speedy recovery from surgery and pain. You are such a kind and generous person and so concerned with justice for Palestine and a new global Marshall Plan, all of which we, as a nation, and all of humanity so badly need. People can be replaced, as they inevitably must be some day (not too soon, I hope), but how can we replace a generous heart? Reza Azarmi — 07:41 PM Mar 04, 2009 Dear Rabbi Lerner, As some one who has been reading the Tikkun for some times now, I have enjoyed your sincere love for mankind. Humility, perseverance, and honesty that Tikkun and its contributors bring to us, the readers, makes me more appreciative of your foresight, endless energy, and profound optimism. As an Iranian Moslem, I grew up in the community of loving Jews in the City of Shiraz, yes the City famous for its wine, poetry, and hopspitality. I was raised with the Jewish kids in my neigborhood, and I take a great deal of pride in my early up bringing. Who were these Jews? Doctors, teachers, barbers gold smith, healers, poets, scholars, shop keepers, and above all Iranian Jews who had lived in that country for more than 2,300 years. They lived, and strong 33,760 strong men and women, old and young, poor and rich still continue to live the Tikkun way. Let's not to forget their struggle for survival, and ability to stand against all odds. May you recover wucik. May Tikkun community continue to grow, and may peace prevails. You are in my prayers. Laughter and love Mikaela and Ben — 03:10 PM Mar 04, 2009 Glad to hear you are finding laughter a fitting cure for what ails you. The Big Lebowski, huh? Hi Michael, I've just got back from visiting my family after my uncle died last week, and it certainly is sobering to come face to face with mortality. As I understand it, it sounds as though things have gone reasonably well for you, although the operation and pain sounds difficult.I'm thinking and praying for you and hope your recovery goes well. I look forward to Torah study whenever you can manage it. Your perspective is invaluable to me and I'm sure to everyone else there. Meanwhile, ever see the movie Zoolander? Completely nuts. If not, let me know and I'll look for it. Blessings to you, Michael. Michael Lerner Richard Lichtman — 11:14 PM Mar 03, 2009 I continue to think of you and wish you well, Michael. If there is anything I can do for you please let me know. Fondly, Richard Lichtman May You Be Renewed And Refreshed.
Tarki — 04:45 PM Mar 03, 2009 For the health that is in our bodies, Even in illness and need, Sustaining, renewing, refreshing, We thank the will of God. I am so pleased that you are returning to health. Now, enjoy discovering the many gifts of convalescence and take it easy! I send you and your family much love and many healing thoughts. Be the Truth You Know and Share Like Never Before Jonathan Klate — 04:33 PM Mar 03, 2009 Dear Michael, First and foremost, in so many ways and forms, you are and have for so long been a Teacher (Note the capital "T.") Those with such a karmic mission live to share and explain the higher truths of oneness and compassion that they discover to be our essential nature. But among the great paradoxes and challenge for such a one is a tendency to under value the crucial importance of embodying the truths that are recognized so readily and shared to generously. So my prayer for you, dear Michael, is that you will allow yourself the time and space to permit the love that so many know animates your work to gracefully and transformatively flow deeply into your own being, to manifest as kindness and forgiveness, first towards yourself and every aspect of your being, and then naturally towards all beings, and all Being. Just, let it be. Listen more, talk less. Dwell in the wisdom of the psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God." This way healing lies. Love. blessing sandra yolles — 04:20 PM Mar 03, 2009 I managed to put some of my artwork together to send you. And that is an achievement of understanding some technical hooha that most everyone else knows by now. http://www.flickr.com/photos/20853164@N05/ I wish you all of the love that you share with us, and that is saying the truth. --sandra PS I hope this photo link works.

It is always such a shock to find out someone who means so much to you and has made such a difference in your life is having such trouble. I always remember the first time I met you in LA when I given the key to the center and suddenly I was "in charge," and marching at the front of 500 people to the Capitol on my first visit for the NSP conference in DC, then the next year, after we met with our legislatures a small group of us outside next to the Capitol in a circle with our arms around each other saying goodbye and blessing the world, and, of course, when you came to Austin and the Congregation Beth Israel was standing room only. Getting to hang out with you during that Austin visit for the book signing, the Kirk Watson party, the trip to the airport, etc., was a true pleasure that I will always cherish. My prayers are with you and your family! Our world needs you so badly--and now we have a president that truly appreciates your point of view--hang in there! :-) Love, Carrie PS-Not intellectual, but "Something About Mary" and "Meet the Fochers" had me laughing uncontrollably. to Rabbi Lerner jonas rabin — 09:42 PM Mar 01, 2009 Rabbi, As a cancer survivor I wish you a speedy recovery. Anyway, this Suk Wah goes to her Guru, and asks, 'How do I get rid of my big ego?' The Guru says with compassion but not mincing words, "You don't have a big ego." Suk Wah is surprised. She asks, ''Really? How so?' The Guru says, "If you have a big ego, you would think about everybody. But you only think about yourself. You have a small ego." I continue to pray for your health on all levels, and I send gratitude for all of your wisdom and gifts to the world. Here are some poems for you. I've written a book called The Edges Are Friendly. I can send you one if you'd like. These poem are not in the book, but the first one is on my mind because I read it today at the end of my yoga class. Thought you might enjoy them. Don’t bother me now I’m busy undressing My hands are full of veils which haunted and blinded me Don’t tempt me now I’m busy getting naked unlayering every stitch casting off the false cloth I assumed would protect me Someday, I’ll take this body off, too, but it doesn’t matter. For now, be gone with you, niceties and politesse I have no use for your misty, gossamer strands demanding heavy, burdensome obedience Leave me alone, I say I drop you to the ground revealing my comfort, like Lalla of old stripped down and asking nothing except entrance through the Open Door. — Ana Holub, 7.24.08 1. Politeness, in French 2. Lalla, or Lal Ded, was a 14th century ecstatic poet, born in Kashmir. She wandered the countryside undressed, singing and dancing her love for God. Turn Around! Turn around with me and walk back toward the One who creates us now in every eternal moment (though even “moments” cannot be accurate and words don’t explain the truth…) Walk with me anyway past mountains and specks of tired dust and the gorgeous beauty of this budding hibiscus… We’ll pass familiar neighborhoods of loneliness and greed, filled with desperate acts of believing But we will not stop instead, we’ll hold hands and continue together as sister and brother Finally family not pausing at every corner that would take too long in fact, we’d get lost if we tried to sample it all Finally family we’ll journey together whenever we’re ready at any intersection we fancy Walking linked emboldened in our union directly into Heaven. — Ana Holub, Sanur, Bali 2008 A Nugget of Indian Wisdom RiverShee — 02:40 PM Feb 26, 2009 Hidden deep in the heart of things, Thou carest for growth and life: the seed becomes shoot, the bud a blossom, the flower becomes fruit. Tired I slept on my idle bed in the illusion that work had an end. In the morning I awoke to find that my garden was full of flowers. ~Tagore~ Alas I cannot be with you for this Shabbat Celebration as I live in Southern California but I will be there in prayer, spirit & solidarity! I hope that you will always find your "Garden is full of flowers" which means that as long as you have breath in your body you still have work to do! Gardens need constant attention & maintenance to look their best. During Shabbat, however, we are given the opportunity to rest & simply enjoy the flowers as we give thanks to Our Creator for all His Blessings May God bless you with joy & laughter as you journey towards your full recovery! Enjoy the roses! Sheena cancer Dan Onorrato — 01:16 PM Feb 26, 2009 Dear Rabbi Lerner, I am keeping you in my prayer for your physical healing and for your enduring spirit that has inspired so many people. I have read a lot of what you've written, and deeply appreciate your insight, large and hopeful vision, and your deep compassion. Your comments on Obama's inaugural speech were right on. I have been making donations to Tikkun/NSP for 3 years now here in Los Angeles. You are in my Mi Sheberach prayers each day for a complete healing of body, mind and spirit. Your work is an inspiration to me, and as a budding cantor, I pray that I will have many opportunities to spread your philosophy and your critical work. David Loy — 03:08 AM Feb 27, 2009 Dear Michael, I haven't emailed earlier but you are very much in my mind. Our breakfast conversation in Berkeley remains fresh in my mind. Films: Do you know 'My Cousin Vinny'? And [although it isn't especially 'funny'] 'My Neighbor Totoro' seems to me a very healing film, as well as the best ever made for very young children -- and many older ones too! May you heal soon, David Sending you love and healing energy Amita Jarmon — 11:51 PM Feb 26, 2009 Dear Michael, I have been praying for your refuah shleimah and sending you strength and love every night since I read about the cancer that was in your lung, and will continue to do so until I hear that you are 100 % healthy. You are an incredible inspiration and force for healing in the world. I hope you are really taking in all the love we are sending your way. I think I mentioned that I will soon be moving from Maine to Jerusalem -- hopefully by Pesach. I have piles and piles of Tikkun magazines from years back that I never threw out -- going back to the late 80s! I must finally find a new home for some of them. I will see if one of the local libraries can take the old ones. If not, they are so precious, I think they belong in a Geniza. /// I am not a funny person -- at least not on purpose. Purim is my least favorite Jewish holiday. I am glad that my rabbinic contract ended right after Tu B'Shvat so I can be in the pews for Purim somewhere else. I love the following piece of humor. It was on Dr. Tamar Kamionkowsky' s door at RRC -- perhaps it still is: Why God didnt get tenure 1. He only had one major publication. 2. It was in Hebrew. 3. It had no references. 4. It wasn't published in a referred journal. 5. Some even doubt He wrote it Himself. 6. It may be true that He created the world, but what has He done since then? 7. His cooperative efforts have been quite limited. 8. The scientific community has had a hard time replicating His results. 9. He never applied to the Ethics Board for permission to use human subjects. 10. When one experiment went awry, He tried to cover it up by drowning the subjects. 11. When subjects didn't behave as predicted, He deleted them from the sample. 12. He rarely came to class, just told students to read the book. 13. Some say He had His son teach the class. 14. He expelled His first two students for learning. 15. Although there were only ten requirements, most students failed His tests. 16. His office hours were infrequent and usually held on a mountaintop. Message of Love Connie Schuett — 01:26 PM Feb 26, 2009 Hello Rabbi Lerner, I am such a fan of yours. You are truly a pioneer who is bridging the gap between the old world order and the new. Down come all the separatist ways -- be they religious, political, ethnic -- we are one world, interconnected and meant to share. Your Marshall plan idea is really the cornerstone of what America's policies must be once again in the war-torn regions of the world. I've heard your voice, and I salute your valiant effort to bring people around to a more inclusive vision of brotherhood. It is coming -- soon -- but don't take it all on your shoulders. Let your very active mind now rest from all your responsibilities and let the vibration of love take over and heal. In fact, no healing ever takes place without love, so allow it to envelop you, and bring your body back into harmony. Like the line in the U2 song says, "you don't have to go it alone." There are many of us who stand with you and behind you. Big Hugs Charlotte Levinson Talberth — 12:59 PM Feb 26, 2009 The worst is behind you now, Michael. Love surrounds you as healing forces rise within you. S'ok. We're doing jokes? This is a true one: My father Carl completely lost what interest he had in material things by the time he died. He had only 2 pair of pants and two shirts in his closet. I said to him, "Dad, that's some wardrobe!". "Yes", he said, "and I don't wear half of it." And here's a little story I picked up from Leonard Cohen as recorded on an mp3 at NYT.com. A questioner asks Cohen, "How do you practice Zen and Judaism at the same time?" He answers, "I can give you a feeling for it. Last winter I was doing silent walking meditation in the snow at a Zen monastery on a mountain top. A very inaccessible place. I heard voices: "(in Yiddish): Which one of you is the Jew?". "Me", I said "I'm the Jew here." Cohen gets out of the walking line and goes in the direction of the voices. There he sees 3 Lubavitcher hassidim. They say to him, "Why are you dressed crazy like that, shaved head, sandals?" He says, "You guys don't look so great either. Look, I'd love to talk to you, but this is a silent retreat. Let's go to my cabin". They go. It is the last night of Hannuka and Cohen's menorah is still burning. There is a warm glow. He says, "Can I get you a drink? I have an unopened package of plastic glasses. You can open them yourselves so your kashrut is not challenged." The hassidim bring out a bottle of Crown Royal. The 4 men sang and danced until daybreak". That is how you practice both. Love, Charlotte prayers Patrick Hogan — 11:48 AM Feb 26, 2009 Dear Dear Rabbi, My wife and children and I are keeping you in our prayers. No words,no gestures, besides being kind and offering help. You articulated in your "Jewish Renewal" book what "God" is for us and every holiday season we reiterate and reiterate that "[God is] That Force [which] exercises a spiritual pull within all Being to move beyond what is to what it ought to be." I will forever be grateful to you, Rabbi, for bringing that concept into my heart and it being a moral guide for my family. Jody Seltzer — 04:26 AM Feb 25, 2009 Dear Michael - I heard about your illness and was upset to know that you are having to deal with this problem. You are in my prayers for a complete healing. I want you to know that though this is surely a test of your desire to be always busy and actively engaged in the world, I'm sure there is a gift of slowing down and allowing yourself to think deeply and to just be with that thinking, instead of immediately turning it into writing or some other form of expression. I'm sure that you have heard from many people who care about you and see how large, diverse and loving your community indeed is. I am sorry that I was not part of your mourning process for your father, I had hoped to come to shiva, but did not actually do it, nonetheless, my thoughts have been with you. I hope to come on Saturday to pray with you and help your healing process, by just being there. I don't know if I can make you laugh, but I want you to know that I care very much and think of you with love. --Jody Refuah Shlemah meir bik — 03:48 AM Feb 25, 2009 Refuah Shlemah to you Rabbi Lerner, I will add one small prayer for your complete recovery from a small congregation in Ramat Gan, Haticha We meet every Shabbat and I am writing your name now to be read . I had similar completely successful surgery over 11 years ago. Mine was a Sarcoma (I also do not/did not smoke), and the surgery was only part of the protocol. This is a fellowship no one wants to join. Today, I do not notice the missing half lung at all. I do notice the missing rib and related occasional aches, but it is an easy trade off for being here and well and active. Take care and do not push yourself too hard and fast. May your recovery process be entirely boring, Dana Do not fear Miriam Menzel — 09:36 AM Feb 18, 2009 Dear Michael, Do not fear. God will be with you. A note from Rabbi Michael Lerner to all of you who have posted on this website as of 12:44 AM Feb 18, 2009-- I think it might be hard for many of you to know just how deeply appreciated these warm wishes, love and support are to me. Taking the time to write something shows a level of involvement that I would not have known otherwise, and makes me feel so much less alone! So a million times "thank you" for all of you who have written to me either online here or in personal emails to me. I'll bring these blessings with me as I enter surgery for this cancer in my lung. Tom Webb — 10:17 AM Feb 13, 2009 Dear Rabbi Michael, Knokw you are in my prayers and that of colleagues in the Catholic justice and peace world. We pray especially today as your surgery begins and in these next months of recovery. God bless, Tom Bikur cholim, wishing a complete recovery John — 03:44 AM Feb 13, 2009 Dear Reb, I hope that you draw strength from all those to whom you have helped to impart strength over the years. Certainly, our thoughts are with you and we wish you a swift and complete healing. You have intelligent advisors in making medical choices. It is a marvel how the world of medicine is rapidly changing. There are scientific advancements in the past decade that have changed outcomes. And there is acceptence now of alternative therapies that would have been quickly disregarded even a decade ago. I have no professional expertise and haven't the intellectual capacity or arrogance to asset just how I have benefited from both traditional medicine and alternatives like accupuncture and even diet-based therapies (i.e. Gerson) to revitalize the body's own healing process. My prayer is that you find strength, too, in knowing that multiple experts are available for your consultation. Our Berkeley minyan will think of you with our misheberach prayer this Shabbos. holding you in the light lou landry — 02:01 AM Feb 13, 2009 Our Quaker community in Boise holds you dearly in the light. You are a blessing gift to our world and we give praise and gratitude for the light you are. Pain free, fast recovery & lots love! Wasim — 12:15 AM Feb 13, 2009 Dear Rabbi Lerner: Pain free, fast recovery! May you come out with ever greater strength from this personal tribulation with your health! May Allah, Elahi, Elohim, El , God G-d compensate your suffering with longer life and ever greater influence to do good! Our prayers and best wishes are with you always! Amen! Your emails keep us all in touch with your profound thoughts as solutions of the day. As a tribute to you courage I am reactivating our Muslim-Jewish Alliance for Peace which was founded in our days in Boston back in 1995 and continued through various forms of interfaith dialogue after I moved to New Jersey. Shalom, Salam, Peace! Best personal regards Wasim
